April 23, 2009 Amy and I like to shop at the Lakeside Farmers Market just about every week. We've been buying lettuce for years from Costco, as it is less expensive than the grocery stores, and it's pretty good quality. Recently however, we were at the farmers market and purchased hydroponically grown lettuce from Randazzo Farms of Lakeside, CA. When we got home we did a taste test between regular Costco Romaine hearts lettuce and the Randazzo hydroponic lettuce (mixed greens), making comparable salads with the same ingredients in each, using Newman's Own Light Italian dressing on both. What did we like the best? While the Costco lettuce is good, the hydroponic lettuce from Randazzo is much better. Ok, so I'm definitely not a food critic, but like most people I do like to eat. However, the Randazzo lettuce is much nicer quality, and tastes incredibly good. It actually makes me want to have salad more often, now that I have a good option on lettuce. At our next trip to Costco after our taste test, we noticed Costco now sells an Organic Spring Mix lettuce, so we thought we would try it. While it too tastes pretty good, it looks like a bunch of weeds. It's also expensive, so my favorite is still the hydroponic lettuce from Randazzo Farms, and we will continue to buy theirs. The best news? The Randazzo hydroponic lettuce is grown right in our home town, and we're helping the local economy and getting an excellent quality product. It is a little more pricey than Costco lettuce, but it's definitely worth the cost, and we're willing to spend more on groceries to get better quality. So if you happen to live near Lakeside, CA and visit the Farmers Market, stop by the Randazzo booth and buy some (and tell them Amy & I recommended them to you)! Disclaimer/Full Disclosure I am not affiliated with Randazzo Farms and was not compensated for this review in any way. The lettuce was purchased at retail price at our local Farmers Market, and this review was my own opinion. |
